On August 28, the U.S. Justice Department released a 231-page report on the FBI’s 2023 Richmond Catholic memo, including evidence of surveillance of traditionalist Catholic clergy. The FBI investigated two priests and conducted surveillance connected to them. One belonged to the Priestly Fraternity of St. Pius X (FSSPX); the other, his uncle, was associated with SSPX Resistance and had been ordained by Bishop Richard Williamson. Agents researched travel and credit-card records. FBI personnel in Boston surveilled the second priest at the airport, while Customs and Border Protection questioned him and searched his phone. Both investigations were subsequently closed after the FBI found no identified national-security threat and no alleged violation of federal law. Worse than Germany: A memorial ceremony for Buddhist woman Marta Pezzati, 59, was held on August 20 in the Catholic Church of San Martino in Rebbio, Como, Italy. Pezzati was president of the volunteer association Como Accoglie and was well known locally for her work assisting migrants and refugees. The ceremony was hosted by the parish priest Giusto Della Valle, who had worked with Pezzati on initiatives involving migrants. Two Buddhist monks participated in the ceremony. Today, Leo XIV issued the Motu Proprio Mutua concordia, setting out “an orderly procedure for the removal of a Patriarch from office by the Synod of Bishops” of an Eastern Catholic Church. The new rules allow a synod, for a grave reason, to ask a patriarch to resign. If he refuses, the bishops can proceed to a secret vote on his removal, in which at least two-thirds of the synod’s voting members must take part. The synod does not have the final word. Leo XIV reserved to the Roman Pontiff “the granting of assent to the synodal decision.” The removal only takes legal effect after the Pope gives his assent. #newsVxvvrngosc
For decades, legend claimed that the pilot who dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima became a Carthusian monk at Serra San Bruno in Calabria. The truth was different. Father Tony Lehmann, a former U.S. soldier, visited Hiroshima after the war and, deeply affected by its devastation, chose to become a “man of peace.” He later joined the Carthusians, living at Serra San Bruno, before becoming a Jesuit devoted to pastoral service. He was no “penitent pilot,” but a witness to Hiroshima who chose peace, prayer and service. Father Tony died of leukemia on March 8, 2002, aged 73.
Silicon Valley “Neighborhood Masses” Fuse Eucharist and Community Organizing. Worse than Germany: One Saturday a month, Rev. Rick Rodoni, pastor of St. Lucy Parish in the heart of Silicon Valley, celebrates pop-up “Neighborhood Masses.” Posters declare that “everyone is welcome!” The Eucharist is celebrated in a parking area, with a makeshift altar and folding chairs. The liturgy is combined with “community listening sessions.” After the Liturgy of the Word, tables are available for neighbors to express their concerns “during the Mass.”
German Church Cancels November Synodal Conference as Vatican Delays Approval: The first “Synodal Conference” of the Church in Germany, scheduled to take place in Stuttgart on November 6–7, has been postponed, Domradio reported on August 28. The main reason is that the statutes are still awaiting the necessary recognition from the Vatican. Hotel rooms that had been reserved for the November meeting have been cancelled. The president of the German Bishops’ Conference, Bishop Heiner Wilmer of Hildesheim, had already said in May that, given the ongoing review by several Vatican dicasteries, he no longer expected the Synodal Conference to begin in November.

Pope Leo XIV was the first pope to travel by boat during the traditional procession on Lake Albano. He was accompanied by a good dozen boats. During the trip, he waved and blessed the people on the shore and on the lake. The trip was accompanied by music and meditations. After about half an hour, the pope’s boat docked again at the shore.

God’s Will Requires A Transformed Mind The first reading highlights Jeremiah’s struggle with God’s will, questioning why God allows suffering despite his call to preach. The second reading emphasizes the need for a transformed mind to discern God’s will, which often involves trials and suffering. These trials, while challenging, are necessary for spiritual growth and strengthening our faith, ultimately conforming us to Christ. God desires us to be the center of our lives, loving Him with all our heart, soul, and strength, and striving to do His will. This requires a transformation of our minds, aligning our thoughts and desires with His, which can only be achieved through prayer and a commitment to living according to His teachings. While this path may be challenging, it leads to fulfillment, peace, and joy, as it conforms us to our true nature as beings created in His image. Fr.
