Peter and Paul in Pécs, Hungary, to mark World Gratitude Day on September 21. “Be careful! They want a Church that simply cannot exist.” That’s what priests in Africa told Archbishop Hubertus van Megen when they learned he was heading to Germany as the papal nuncio in Berlin. In an interview with Katholisch.de, published September 23, Van Megen, who spent nearly 16 years in Africa before moving to Berlin, said tensions over Germany’s Synodal Path run “throughout the entire universal Church.” The Dutch prelate also sees parallels with secularization in the Netherlands. “The Germans, in my impression, often want too much too quickly,” he said, questioning whether reforms are meant to “save” the Church: “I would consider that an illusion.”
