Leo XIV Approves Maronite Archbishop of Damascus

Today, Pope Leo XIV has approved the election of Sharbel Ghattas Maroun as the new Maronite Catholic archbishop of Damascus. A Lebanese-born priest, he has spent much of his ministry in the United States.
Archbishop Maroun, 64, was elected by the Synod of Bishops of the Maronite Church. He succeeds Archbishop Samir Nassar, 76, whose resignation was accepted by the synod.
Since 2020, Maroun has served as protosyncellus, a senior position comparable to vicar general, of the Maronite Eparchy of Our Lady of Lebanon of Los Angeles.
Born January 6, 1962, in Kfarselwan, Lebanon, Maroun briefly worked for Crédit Libanais bank.

Contemporary Dance Integrated into Assumption Liturgy in Mallorca

Worse than Germany: A contemporary dance and sound performance was incorporated into the celebration of the Solemnity of the Assumption at the Church of Sant Joan Baptista in Muro, Mallorca. It was entitled El Vol Màgic (“The Magic Flight”).
According to the Diocese of Mallorca, the work was “conceived specifically for the liturgical context of the celebration of the Assumption of the Mother of God.”
The project was directed by a musician and developed together with a dancer and choreographer, an organist, and a sound specialist.
According to the diocesan description, the project grew out of research into Mallorca’s traditional observances surrounding the Assumption and sought to explore the relationship between “sound, body, space and ritual.”

The Golden Arrow
May the most holy, most sacred, most adorable
, most mysterious and unutterable Name of God be always praised, blessed, loved, adored and glorified, in heaven, on earth and under the earth, by all the creatures of God, and by the Sacred Heart of Our Lord Jesus Christ in the most holy Sacrament of the altar.
The Golden Arrow was revealed by Our Lord Jesus Christ to a Carmelite nun of Tours in 1843 as a reparation for blasphemy. The sin of blasphemy was said to be a 'poisoned arrow' more grievous than all other sins. It follows that this prayer would most especially be appropriate after hearing the Holy Name blasphemed, and in reparation for such blasphemy generally. Jesus said: 'This Golden Arrow will wound My Heart delightfully, and heal the wounds inflicted by blasphemy.

War Against the Ancient Mass Is Destructive for the Church - Cardinal Sarah

When the generation of the ’68ers passes away, the unfounded, one-sided attitudes against Latin and Gregorian chant will pass away as well, Cardinal Robert Sarah told IlGiornale.it on August 27.
Benedict XVI’s liberalization of the Traditional Latin Mass had a positive and even corrective influence on abuses in the celebration of the Novus Ordo, Cardinal Sarah said.
“Many priests testify that discovering the Extraordinary Form helped them to celebrate better.”
Furthermore, the faithful could choose which form corresponded more closely to the fostering of the faith.
“But all of this was brought to an abrupt end by Traditionis Custodes while the Pope Emeritus was still alive.”
Francis’ restrictions on the Latin Mass were “neither a wise nor a respectful choice.”
Cardinal Sarah added that access to “ritual forms that have existed for centuries can never be artificially restricted by decrees.”
Without referring explicitly to the Novus Ordo, Sarah noted that a rite that did not serve the …Magis

Israeli Settler Who Attacked French Catholic Nun Acquitted

The Jerusalem Magistrate’s Court has acquitted Yona Simcha Schreiber, 36, of criminal responsibility for a violent attack on a French Catholic nun in April.
The court accepted psychiatric evidence that he was psychotic at the time of the assault. He could neither understand the nature of his actions nor control them, the court ruled.
He was ordered to undergo compulsory psychiatric hospitalization for up to six years.
The attack occurred on Mount Zion, near King David’s Tomb outside Jerusalem’s Old City. Security footage showed Schreiber running toward the 48-year-old nun from behind and knocking her violently to the ground, causing her head to strike the stone pavement.
Schreiber initially walked away before returning and kicking the nun while she remained on the ground. He also assaulted a passerby who attempted to intervene.
The victim is a researcher at the Dominican-run École Biblique et Archéologique Française de Jérusalem.
Schreiber is a resident of Peduel, an illegal settlement …Magis

Leo XIV’s Argentina Visit to Carry Forward Francis’s Legacy

Argentine newspaper La Nación reports that Pope Leo XIV’s planned visit to Argentina is shaping up as a strong continuation of Pope Francis’s pastoral priorities and style, with a particular emphasis on the poor, workers, prisoners and marginalized communities.
The likely agenda includes a meeting with grassroots and social movements, a visit to Villa Devoto prison, and a large gathering with young people at San Lorenzo’s football stadium in Buenos Aires.
All three have strong symbolic connections to Francis.
As Archbishop Jorge Bergoglio, Francis maintained close relationships with poor neighborhoods, prisoners and grassroots movements. San Lorenzo was also famously his football club. The stadium is located near the Padre Ricciardelli neighborhood, where Bergoglio frequently carried out pastoral work.
According to the provisional schedule, Leo XIV would arrive in Buenos Aires from Uruguay on Sunday, November 8, spend several days in Argentina, potentially travel to Córdoba on November …Magis

Two pastors in South Korea have been fined 1 million won (about €620) each after loudly preaching on a domestic flight from Jeju to Seoul. They shouted that passengers would “go to hell” if they did not believe in Jesus, while one moved around the cabin. They continued despite instructions from the cabin crew to stop. A Seoul court found that their conduct constituted a disturbance under South Korea’s Aviation Security Act.

The court said the 64-year-old pastor stood in the aisle despite repeated attempts by crew members to stop him and shouted at passengers, “You will go to hell if you don’t believe in Jesus.”

This unrelated file photo shows the interior of an airplane. (Getty Images Bank) Two pastors were fined 1 million won ($723) each for disrupting a domestic flight by loudly preaching to passengers and refusing repeated requests from cabin crew to stop, local media reported Monday. The pastors, 64 and 68, were convicted of violating the Aviation Security Act over an incident aboard a flight from Jeju to Gimpo that departed at around 3:40 p.m. on March 12, according to the Seoul Southern District Court's Aug. 18 ruling. The court said the 64-year-old pastor stood in the aisle despite repeated attempts by crew members to stop him and shouted at passengers, “You will go to hell if you don’t believe in Jesus.” The other pastor joined in, shouting, "Hallelujah, you will go to hell" while walking up and down the aisle. When a crew member approached to issue a warning, the pastors reportedly shouted back, "Don't try to lecture me." The two ignored repeated complaints and objections from crew …

Singapore Introduces New Family Support Measures: With the country’s fertility rate falling to a record low of just 0.87 children per woman, Singapore is introducing a major new support package for families. From 2027, the government will provide nearly S$70,000 (about US$55,000) in support for each Singaporean child from birth to age 17. The package includes cash payments, childcare credits, healthcare and education support.

Singapore will pay about $55,000 in support for each child; why the country is paying parents to have babies

The announcement was made by Prime Minister Lawrence Wong during Singapore's National Day Rally on August 23. Singapore has a problem that money alone has not been able to solve. People there are having fewer children. Now the country is trying a bigger, longer-term approach. Singapore will provide almost S$70,000 (around US$55,000 or roughly Rs 47 lakh) in direct financial support for every Singaporean child, from birth until the child turns 17.The announcement was made by Prime Minister Lawrence Wong during Singapore's National Day Rally on August 23. But the headline figure needs some context. This is not a S$70,000 cheque that parents receive after having a baby. The amount is spread across different forms of support, including cash payments, healthcare-related grants, child credits and education support. The move comes as Singapore's fertility rate has fallen to its lowest recorded level. According to Singapore's Department of Statistics, the country's resident total fertility rate …

Mother of Mercy Chapel in Columbus, Ohio, was already a beautiful Romanesque-style church, but later 20th-century alterations had diminished the coherence of its sanctuary. In 2025, William Heyer Architect replaced the small modern forward altar with a hand-carved wooden freestanding altar better suited to the character of the historic interior. The main intervention was the expansion of Rudolph Scheffler’s 1950s Christ the King apse mural. New saints and sacred symbols now occupy previously bare areas around the original composition.

The chapel was already built around the substantial architectural bones of a Romanesque style architecture, with stone walls, columns with decorative capitals, an open-trussed timber ceiling, and an impressive apse featuring and image of Christ the King enthroned. Let's jump right into things with the 'before.' BEFORE Many of our 'before and afters' feature a parish that had either been stripped of its liturgical appointments and ornaments at some point, or some which never had them in the first place. In this instance, while we can certainly see some evidence of the later twentieth century modifications, the chapel …

VaticanNews.va has profiled Anna Medeossi, the first woman to serve as rector of a Catholic shrine. The Italian architect and consecrated virgin has served for nearly a year as rector of the Shrine of Notre-Dame de Santa Cruz in Oran, Algeria. She initially became involved with the shrine as an architect, working on its renovation. The shrine is visited primarily by Muslims.

First woman rector of a shrine: Witnessing to the Gospel through listening

[vaticannews] At the Rimini Meeting, we spoke with Anna Medeossi, who has been entrusted with the care of Notre-Dame de Santa Cruz in Oran, Algeria, about her story of encounter, faith, and listening.
By Eugenio Murrali and Andrea Tornielli - Rimini
Anna Medeossi has a lively and determined gaze, gentleness in her voice and gestures, and a wisdom that is both humble and profound.
An architect originally from the Italian city of Gorizia, she might never have imagined what life would call her to do nearly a year ago: become the first woman in the world to serve as rector of a shrine.
That distinction takes on even greater significance because of where the shrine is located: Notre-Dame de Santa Cruz in Oran, Algeria, an overwhelmingly Muslim country.
Images of the shrine she oversees were seen around the world on the occasion of the beatification of the Martyrs of Algeria.
From architecture to caring for the shrine
Her arrival at Santa Cruz—where she now also lives as a consecrated virgin …Magis
