Criticize Harrison Butker all you want. Homemaking is back - Washington Examiner

Harrison Butker touched a live wire in his recent commencement address at Benedictine College. The place kicker for the …

"when necessity compels, not those only who are invested with power of rule are bound to safeguard the integrity of faith, but, as St. Thomas maintains: 'Each one is under obligation to show forth his faith, either to instruct and encourage others of the faithful, or to repel the attacks of unbelievers'. To recoil before an enemy, or to keep silence when from all sides such clamors are raised against truth, is the part of a man either devoid of character or who entertains doubt as to the truth of what he professes to believe. In both cases such mode of behaving is base and is insulting to God" (Pope Leo XIII, "Sapientiae Christianae", 10.01.1890).

Are you implying that this person is actually safeguarding the integrity of the faith? That is laughable. I have already pointed out how, in several places, his speech contradicts the Faith or fails to illuminate the Faith. He's opining without substantiating...that's about it. You better lean before you change lanes, that's all I can say.
spinmeister
@Denis Efimove Or maybe you were referring to my safeguarding the integrity of the Faith. In that case, good quote.
Denis Efimov
@spinmeister
The quote is mainly about how you don't have to be a priest to instruct others or defend the faith, especially in our time. And in what way does this person contradict faith?
spinmeister
I have pointed out a couple of his errors in at least two other articles, one of which was removed as a result. I already said that I didn't want to parse this entire speech. But I could if it were important enough to bother, which it is NOT. But this one seemed to hit home with someone as it was removed:
“When you embrace tradition, success, worldly and spiritual will follow” Here is the full …More

Of course this statement is not true and has never been taught by any Catholic or Christian: "“When you embrace tradition, success, worldly and spiritual will follow.” Very few who follow Christ have found worldly success, often just the opposite. That's the prosperity gospel of Joel Osteen and others, frequently found in the athletic mileau that he's preaching right there.

Another is his assertion that marriage and homemaking are the highest calling:

Statement in Response to the 2024 Benedictine College Commencement Address: "The sisters of Mount St …
One of the nuns' concerns was Butker's assertion that being a homemaker is the highest calling for a woman. This statement goes against the true Catholic teaching that a calling to the priesthood or religious life is the highest calling: Canon X Session 24 of the Council of Trent—If any one saith, that the marriage state is to be placed above the state of virginity, or of celibacy, and that it is not better and more blessed to remain in virginity, or in celibacy, than to be united in matrimony: let him be anathema.

So in fact, one of the the nuns' concerns is based entirely in Catholic dogma which Butker contradicted.

He also very strongly advocated attending the Latin Mass. This would have been his opportunity, if he really were so fearless in defending the Faith, to explain WHY one should attend the Latin Mass. ie because it is the Liturgy of the true Catholic Faith representing the unbloody recreation of Christ's sacrifice on Calvary for the atonement of sins. The Mass is a sin offering. That has been the consistent teaching of the TRUE Faith until Vatican II, which changed the Liturgy to a Protestant meal service to placate Protestants.

But he said none of that. He actually gave the incredibly retarded, but so en vogue explanation, and I quote, you will see "how much more colorful and alive your life can and should be."

Yes. You should relocate for the Latin Mass, not because that is the Mass that Christ instituted, or that is the Mass that honors God, but because of how it will make YOU feel, although no one knows why....

That's it. I'm done with this topic now. If you all honestly just can not believe how amazing this guy and his little high school graduation speech are and how he's a priest defending the Church and blah, blah, blah, why should I waste my breath any more. You're as vacuous and low intellect as he is.
Denis Efimov
Well, if he really believes that marriage is superior to the state of virginity or celibacy, or that the traditional Holy Mass is not the true expression of the true Catholic Faith instituted by Christ, or that the Most Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is not the atoning Sacrifice of the Cross, or professes the "prosperity gospel", then he seriously mistaken in faith.

For those who are saying that a mere football player has no right to opine on the sorry sate of the Church, I point out we're living in strange times. We have athletes who speak like priests and priests who act like athletes - in the worst sense. They're obsessed with the body, having fun, and being popular. Don't believe me? Everyone has a right to opine, and it seems as if everyone does opine. This particular athlete is perhaps "speaking like a priest," in some people's opines, but in fact, if those opining knew the Faith, he most definitely, is not.
Father Karl A Claver
God bless and protect him. His words should have been spoken much earlier and more often by the bishops, who have been only concerned with mammon and socialistic nonsense.
spinmeister
Are you a priest like "Father" Gordon MacRae is a priest?
spinmeister
I think he might have veered from his lane...
spinmeister
He's 30. He's Opus Dei. He knows what men should be doing, what women should be doing, what his wife should be doing, what couples should be doing, what priests should be doing, what Catholics should be doing. He knows it all because he gets his info from his teammate's EX girlfriend and his numerary. Just lean into your career and stay in your lane and it's all good.
Credo .
So?
spinmeister
I'm not going to parse this speech from the standpoint of Catholic teaching, but there are problems with it from that standpoint. And he is not performing miracles, he is lecturing as a Catholic and alleging that he is speaking Catholic truths, which he is not. He that is not with me, is against me: and he that gathereth not with me, scattereth. Matt 12:30.

@Liam Ronan No, jots and tittles, not even an acquaintance of mine.
